Hobart Claims Mariano Cup

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the third straight year, the Mariano Cup will reside in the Hobart Hockey team's locker room. The top-ranked Statesmen defeated Norwich, which was receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll, 5-2 in the final New England Hockey Conference championship game. It was Hobart's fourth NEHC title in seven seasons.

With the win, Hobart (26-1-1) earned the NEHC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The entire 14-team field will be released on Monday, March 10, during the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Selection Show on NCAA .com at 10 a.m.
 
Senior Shane Shell and junior Tanner Daniels led the way for Hobart, recording a goal and an assist each. Sophomore Dominic Schimizzi and first-years Ryan Remick and Tamas Toth also scored for the Statesmen.  Junior Damon Beaver played all 60 minutes in goal. He made 18 saves.
 
Clark Kerner and Owen Sclisizzi scored for the Cadets. Sami Molu played all 60 minutes in goal for Norwich. He made 29 saves. The Cadets conclude their season with a 15-10-3 overall record.
 
STREAKING

  • Hobart has won an NCAA Division III record 52 straight games at The Cooler.
  • The Statesmen will be making their 10th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.

 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Hobart finished the game with a 34-20 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play.

 
CLIMBING THE LADDER

  • Graduate student Austin Mourar played in his Hobart record 115th career game today.
  • With today's win, Beaver became the second goalie in program history to record 50 wins. He is one behind Keith Longo on Hobart's all-time list.
  • Senior Luke Aquaro played in his 108th career game, which is the seventh most in program history.
  • Shell became the 26th player in program history to play in 100 career games.  

 
SCORING SUMMARY

  • Hobart opened the scoring at the 9:53 mark of the first period. Schimizzi snapped a shot from the left faceoff circle past Molu for his ninth goal of the season. Sophomore Chris Duclair was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • Norwich tied the game at the 5:22 mark of the second period. Sclisizzi ripped a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle over Beaver's blocker and into the upper left corner of the cage. Alex Lewis and Bryan O'Mara had assists on Sclisizzi's third goal of the season.
  • Just under four minutes later, Shell pocketed his eighth goal of the year. Crashing the net, he redirected a centering pass from Daniels past Molu. First-year Connor Elliot also had an assist on the goal.
  • Daniels extended Hobart's lead to two goals at the 3:26 mark of the third period. Shell dug a loose puck out of a scrum along the left wing. He skated to the slot and fed a pass to Daniels, who blasted a one-timer into the back of the net. The power-play goal was Daniels' 18th goal of the season.
  • Norwich made it a one-goal game four minutes later. Kerner fired a shot through traffic and past Beaver. His 12th goal of the season was a power-play tally and was assisted by Cooper Bertrand and Ben van Waterschoot.
  • Sixty-four seconds later, Remick notched his fourth goal of the season, firing a shot from the right faceoff circle past Molu for his fourth goal of the season. Sophomores Bauer Morrissey and Conor Lally had assists on the goal.
  • Toth tacked on an insurance goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game. He snapped a centering pass from Duclair past Molu for his second goal of the season.

 
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

  • Junior Tanner Daniels was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He had two goals and an assist on the weekend.
  • He was joined on the all-tournament team by defenseman Austin Mourar and Cooper Swift and forward Dominic Schimizzi.
  • Norwich's Clark Kerner and Devon Thibodeau also earned a spot on the team.
