Hobart Defeats to Geneseo to Earn Spot in National Championship

UTICA, N.Y.—The top-ranked Hobart hockey team defeated fourth-ranked Geneseo 2-1 in a national semifinal at the Utica University Nexus Center this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are 28-1-1 overall this season and advance to the national championship game for the third straight season.

First-year Calum Chau and senior Matthew Iasenza scored the goals for the Statesmen. Junior goalie Damon Beaver played all 60 minutes in goal and made 10 saves.
 
Peter Morgan scored the goal for Geneseo, which finishes its season with a 24-5-1 overall record. Adam Harris played just under 59 minutes in goal and made 38 saves.
 
RECORD BREAKER

  • With tonight's win Damon Beaver picked up his Hobart record 52nd career victory. He surpassed the the Statesman record held by Keith Longo '09.

 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Hobart finished the game with a 40-21 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Statesmen were 0-for-2 on the power play and the Knights were 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.

 
SCORING SUMMARY

  • Hobart opened the scoring at the 5:39 mark of the second period. Calum Chau knuckled a shot from the point through traffic and past Harris for his second goal of the season. Junior Kahlil Fontana had an assist on the goal.
  • Geneseo tied it up at the 2:16 mark of the third period when Morgan snuck home his 15th goal of the season. It was an unassisted goal.
  • Iasenza scored the game winner just past the midway point of the second period. He raced down the right wing and snapped a shot from a tight angle past Harris.  His fourth goal of the season was assisted by graduate student Austin Mourar.

Hobart will be back in action on Sunday, March 30, when it takes on sixth-ranked Utica. Sunday's national championship game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
