GAME PREVIEW:

  • The Soaring Eagles secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship following a 5-2 victory over Endicott College on Saturday at the Murray Athletic Center. EC raced out to a 3-0 advantage as Ryan Reifler '24 would net the eventual game-winning tally at the 9:36 mark of the second period. Reifler and Janis Vizbelis '24 each netted two goals in the contest for the Purple & Gold.
  • Saturday's matchup between the Soaring Eagles and the Bantams will be the seventh meeting between the two programs, as the Bantams have won each of the previous two contests and hold a 4-2 record in the head-to-head series. The last victory for the Soaring Eagles against Trinity came on home ice as EC defeated the Bantams 6-1 in the NCAA DIII Quarterfinals on March 15, 2008. EC is 1-1-1 all-time in games played in Hartford, as the Soaring Eagles won the inaugural meeting on December 10, 1999.
  • Trinity enters the contest riding an 11-game winning streak after capturing the program's second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in the last three seasons. Curry College, Hobart College, and Connecticut College are the lone three programs that have beaten the Bantams this season. The Bantams return to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year hiatus as Trinity dropped a 3-0 decision to Babson in the NCAA First Round during the 2021-22 season. The Bantams have advanced to the NCAA Semifinals three times in program history as they captured the National Championship during the 2014-15 season with a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
  • The Soaring Eagles have been paced by a trio of 30-point scorers in Shawn Kennedy '24 (39 pts), Nicholas Domitrovic '24 (38 pts), and Janis Vizbelis '24 (34 pts) as EC looks to have its first 40-point scorer since Nick Ford '20 during the 2019-20 season. EC currently leads the country in power-play percentage (31.2%) and is fifth in scoring offense (4.18 goals per game) and 10th in scoring margin (1.68).
  • The Bantams have been paced this season by Richard Boysen, who has 11 goals and 11 assists through 27 games. Ned Blanchard leads the team with 15 assists this season, while Boysen and Gerard Marretta have each netted three power-play goals for Trinity. The Bantams rank third in the country in penalty killing (90.5%), second in scoring defense (1.26 goals allowed), and fifth in scoring margin (2.22).
