NEHC Women - Week 1 Release
MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) announced its weekly awards for games played through Sunday, October 31. Soph Hamel (Lincoln, R.I.) of Johnson and Wales University was tabbed as both Player and Rookie of the Week for her performance this weekend. William Smith College's Amanda Aalto (West Barnstable, Mass.) was recognized as Goaltender of the Week.
Player and Rookie of the Week
Soph Hamel – Johnson & Wales University
(Freshman, Forward/Defense – Lincoln, R.I.)
In her first collegiate action, Soph Hamel tallied three goals in two games, helping Johnson & Wales to two victories to open the season. Hamel scored her first collegiate goal in a 4-1 victory over Curry on Friday night. On Saturday, she scored two back-to-back goals while the Wildcats were trailing 2-0 to knot the score at two before JWU went on to win. She finished as a +4, converting three of her five shots.
Goaltender of the Week
Amanda Aalto – William Smith College
(Senior, Goaltender – West Barnstable, Mass.)
Aalto recorded a shutout in William Smith's season-opening victory on Friday night. She stopped all 24 shots she faced as William Smith defeated Potsdam at The Cooler. It was the fifth shutout of her career.
Honor Roll
Katie Leffler – UMass Boston
(Senior, Forward – Key Largo, Fla.)
Leffler had a three-point performance in the Beacons 2021-22 season opener against Suffolk. She scored the first goal of the season in the first 46 seconds of the contest and then added her second goal and assist in the second period to lead the Beacons offense.
Mary McCafferty – Elmira College
(Senior, Forward – Wall Township, N.J.)
McCaffrey played a role in three of her team's five goals as Elmira opened the 2021-22 season with a 5-1 win over Utica College. She opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal in the first period and then tacked on an additional goal in the second period. She also added a helper on the Soaring Eagles' fifth goal of the game.
Haley McKim – University of Southern Maine
(Sophomore, Goaltender – Moncton, N.B.)
McKim started both games in net for the Huskies this past week. The sophomore netminder totaled 57 saves, a .950 save percentage, a 1.51 goals-against average and a 1-1-0 record. In the season-opening 4-1 win over UNE on Friday, McKim stopped 24 shots. In the tough luck defeat to Endicott on Saturday, McKim tallied 33 saves.
